Walk the Line is a story about the life of Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix stars starting from the days of his youth as a farm boy to the pinnacle of his career as a famous and beloved musician. Through life he struggles with love, drug abuse, and earning the respect of his father.
First of all, I’d like to say that “Walk the Line” is a good movie with great music, good story line and a performance by Joaquin Phoenix that got better as the movie moved along. Still, to be very honest, Walk The Line was the Johnny Cash version of “Ray” but not quite as good. The similarities are so close, it was as if the Writer and Director saw “Ray” and quickly decided, ‘hey lets make a movie about Johnny Cash while the people are in the mood for stories about dead musical icons’. I mean… I know that Hollywood loves to copycat successful movies but wow they’ve reached an all time low with this one. Johnny couldn’t help that he had the same life issues as Ray Charles Jr, but just before the ending credits of “Ray” they could’ve simply added ‘oh yeah and this all happened to Johnny Cash too’. I cant stress enough, If you’ve seen Ray, you don’t want to see this movie. Yeah the songs are different, but it doesn’t match the energy, editing style and acting performance of the leading role. The movie was good but it comes off as a cheap knock off of the original. If you are a Big Johnny Cash fan choose Walk the line, but if you are a big movie fan choose “Ray”.
